Dynamic Rehabilitation is one of the largest spinal rehabilitation practices of its kind in the country. It is the only one of its kind in Michigan specializing solely in the treatment of sub-acute and chronic back and neck pain. Our medical specialists have completed over 800,000 spinal patient visits and developed the most comprehensive and successful spinal rehabilitation program available anywhere. Over 1,000 local physicians refer their friends, families and patients to Dynamic Rehabilitation because of our history of providing the very best long term results.
The goal for each patient is to end or significantly reduce symptoms of pain and restore the health and function (strength, range of motion and flexibility) to the weakened areas of the spine. By accomplishing this goal, we can help a patient enjoy a more normal and active life...free of pain. The results we achieve with our patients are unparalleled in the industry which is why Dynamic Rehabilitation is the only company in Michigan that has received the unique designation of a Spine Center of Excellence by Health Alliance Plan, Priority Health and Blue Care Network.
We have been successful with most patients completing our program, regardless of intake diagnosis or other unsuccessful treatments. Most important to the referring physician is our ability to provide scientifically based, objectively measured and consistently outstanding clinical outcomes.
The key to the Dynamic Difference is our unique, multi-disciplinary approach. It combines MedX technology and McKenzie therapy with the experience of our specialized team of medical doctors, physical therapists, neuromuscular therapists and exercise physiologists who treat back and neck pain exclusively.
MedX is the only technology that specifically isolates, tests, strengthens and rehabilitates the back, neck and surrounding areas of the spine through the full spinal range of motion. MedX provides the only reproducible and reliable objective clinical documentation of spinal soft tissue injuries. McKenzie therapy is a recognized leader in mechanical diagnosis and treatment of the spine.
The Dynamic treatment program works better because it ends or significantly reduces pain and related symptoms by applying the most advanced, researched and documented methods available to a pro-active philosophy. We understand all organized soft tissue injury repair comes from controlled, loaded motion that is appropriately monitored. Strengthening the back and neck muscles and improving range of motion, flexibility and endurance provides a healthy spine and benefits the patient in the following ways.
- Biochemically (disc nutrition)
- Physiologically (soft tissue injury repair)
- Psychologically (improved mental attitude)
- In addition, the Dynamic treatment program provides generalized conditioning of upper and lower extremities to support and protect the spine
We know because many patients have experienced their pain for so long and have been unsuccessful with other treatments, they are a bit skeptical and impatient. Understandably so. It is important for each patient beginning their Dynamic treatment program to realize no two patients are the same, even with similar symptoms or causes of pain. Some patients begin to feel and function better almost immediately, while others actually feel a little worse before they get better because we are working muscles with little or no prior exercise. Every patient is different. Many patients begin feeling better in their first few visits. Others may take a couple of weeks. The majority of patients experience significant improvement by their 10th-12th visit if they follow the program guidelines closely.
MedX provides the only reproducible and reliable objective clinical documentation of spinal soft tissue injuries. MedX is the only technology that is able to specifically isolate, test, strengthen and rehabilitate the weakened muscles that surround the spine through the full spinal range of motion. When exercising with any other equipment, larger muscle groups compensate for weakened muscles surrounding the spine. The only way to treat the problem of pain and dysfunction is to get to its structural injury and isolate it. No other spine rehabilitation device tests for multiple positions. This enables MedX to get a precise and accurate picture of the strength of the spine to maximize rehabilitation.
MedX is the only technology that has utilization guidelines formulated by a committee of well-respected spine researchers which promote and ensure correct use of the system. MedX technology is the most researched and published spine rehabilitation device available. It is the only system providing objective testing and rehabilitation of neuromusculoskeletal conditions resulting in mechanical lumbar and cervical pain.
Once the spinal muscles are rehabilitated, patients start using them during their activities of daily living which helps to maintain the strength, range of motion and endurance achieved in our program. Increasing the strength, range of motion and endurance of the back or neck enables us to end or significantly reduce a patient's pain and related symptoms. By improving the integrity of structural and functional tissues that have degenerated, we can improve pain syndromes. Basic research on MedX technology has determined the appropriate:
- Validity of exercise
- Frequency of exercise
- Intensity of exercise
- Reproducibility
- Normative (average) data by age and sex
McKenzie™ therapy is a scientifically researched and peer-reviewed system for the mechanical assessment and treatment of the spine. Specific treatment under the McKenzie method is directly related to the assessment. This method encourages mechanical movement patterns which cause centralization of symptoms resulting in an acceleration of the healing process. The application of McKenzie therapy to MedX strengthening and isolated motion of the lumbar and cervical spine is an effective treatment combination.
A most relevant conclusion in Spine to "Prospective Study of Centralization of Lumbar and Referred Pain" states: the McKenzie assessment process reliably differentiates discogenic from nondiscogenic pain (p<0.001) as well as competent from an incompetent annulus (p<0.042) in symptomatic discs and was superior to magnetic resonance imaging in distinguishing painful from nonpainful discs. (Spine, volume 22, number 10, pp 1115-1122)
Absolutely. Decreased mobility from loss of motion is a primary indicator of functional disability following an acute injury, surgery, or long standing chronic condition.
It is crucial a rehabilitative process be employed that can directly utilize the affected area in order to begin the healing process as early as possible. The MedX rehabilitation program is a prime example of such a therapy process.
If earlier mobilization is employed at the onset of injury or at the earliest stage possible, the healing of soft tissues of the lumbar spine will be enhanced and functional restoration will result. The benefits of the MedX program in the healing process may be defined as follows:
- Early mobilization
- Pain reduction
- Minimization of fibrous adhesions and contractures
- Linear scar formation
- Increased range-of-motion
- Shortened recovery time
- Reduced chronic disability
- Reduced psychological barriers to recovery
The Dynamic treatment program follows these protocols:
- A complete mechanical assessment using the McKenzie method.
- An individualized lumbar or cervical exercise program designed to restore the functional integrities of the injured or generated tissues.
- Overall musculoskeletal conditioning.
Our individualized rehabilitation program involves the following schedule beginning on the third visit after initial medical history review, examination, baseline testing and MedX equipment orientation have been completed.
- Specific rehabilitation goals are set. These goals involve strength and range of motion levels that are measured against normative data.
- The patient comes for rehabilitation two times per week for one month.
- After the 10th-12th visit, there will be a re-evaluation meeting with our physician or physical therapist to make sure the patient is progressing accordingly.
At this time, we discuss with the patient his/her progress relating to both objective and subjective improvements. Objective improvements include the patient's spinal strength, range of motion and endurance. Subjective improvements include pain level and the patient's activities of daily living such as sleeping, driving, walking and standing.
- The patient is required to meet with our physician or physical therapist on a monthly basis, no matter how many visits have been completed, to comply with insurance guidelines. Any change in the program or diagnosis requires written approval from our medical staff or the referring physician.
- The entire rehabilitation program typically consists of three weekly rehabilitation sessions for 6-8 weeks. A patient will usually plateau, or reach maximum functioning level, between the 18th and 24th rehabilitation session.
- Upon reaching the maximum functioning level, the patient will be discharged from active MedX rehabilitation.
- The patient's progress is clearly monitored and frequently evaluated by Dynamic 's entire team of medical specialists. All reports are sent to the referring physician and insurance company upon request.
- Our medical staff management meets weekly to review patients not progressing satisfactorily to adjust their treatment program.
- Additional program benefits include strengthening ancillary muscle groups, cardiovascular activities and spinal education.
The key to proper management of these cases is documentation. Objective documentation of functional impairment is required for reimbursement of loss and MedX provides objective functional testing of the cervical and lumbar spine. Patients with injuries to the cervical and lumbar spine frequently suffer from deconditioning and degeneration of the musculoskeletal soft tissues resulting in loss of strength and flexibility. MedX tests strength throughout the patients' range of motion, compares their performance to normative values based on age and sex and reports their functional impairment.
Dynamic provides these patients with a comprehensive program to assist them in recovering from their pain, suffering and functional impairment. While undergoing rehabilitation, whenever possible, the patient will be allowed to return to restricted work. The goal is always to return the patient to unrestricted work as soon as functional impairment allows.
After the patient has completed their Dynamic Rehabilitation program, they will again be tested. The patient's discharge evaluation will include a final report of their functional impairment, if any, as well as the patient's overall strength, range-of-motion and pain level improvements.
The Dynamic Rehabilitation treatment program is supervised by a team of specialists including board-certified medical doctors, licensed physical therapists specially trained in the McKenzie Method as well as physical therapist assistants, neuromuscular therapists and athletic trainers.
